Great Wolf Lodge Expansion Creates 300 Jobs, Boosts Regional Economy

Great Wolf Lodge Pocono expansion

In recent months, the Pocono Mountains region has seen several major investments and trends poised to strengthen its economy. Highlights include a $125 million expansion of the Great Wolf Lodge indoor waterpark resort (adding dozens of new suites and slides and 300 jobs), the opening of a state-of-the-art defense manufacturing facility at Tobyhanna Army Depot, and shifts in the local housing and tourism markets. Infrastructure projects such as federal funding for the Scranton–New York passenger rail line (with proposed stops in East Stroudsburg and Mt. Pocono) promise to improve access and spur growth. Together, these developments are expected to drive job creation and revenue across Monroe, Pike, Carbon and Wayne counties in 2025 and beyond.

Great Wolf Lodge Expansion

In October 2023, Great Wolf Lodge Pocono Mountains celebrated completion of a top-to-bottom renovation and expansion. The project added 202 new hotel suites and 30 three-bedroom “Woodland Villa” units, seven new water slides (expanding the indoor park by 40,000 sq ft), two new restaurants, an outdoor pool area and other amenities. This $125 million investment by owners Blackstone and Centerbridge will create 300 additional jobs, bringing the resort’s workforce to over 1,000 employees. Management says the upgrade enhances the family-friendly destination and will attract more visitors to the Poconos. This expansion is a strong signal of confidence in the region’s tourism sector.

Tobyhanna Army Depot Facility

Also in 2025, the Tobyhanna Army Depot in Monroe County cut the ribbon on a new Microelectronics Facility. This modern factory was designed to assemble “the vital ‘brains’ behind many of our nation’s most advanced defense technologies”. Bringing this capability in-house will speed production and improve quality control for Army electronics. Officials note the new facility not only bolsters national security, but also provides “valuable workforce development opportunities” and economic growth for the local community. Tobyhanna is one of the region’s largest employers, and this expansion should sustain and create high-tech jobs in the area.

Pocono Housing Market

The residential real estate market in the Poconos is heating up as well. According to local agents, median home prices have been rising steadily through 2023 and 2024. Lower but stabilizing mortgage rates have spurred buyers eager to lock in deals, even as inventory remains tight. Many buyers are seeking move-in ready or newly renovated homes. Notably, East Stroudsburg has become a new “hot spot” due to its easy access to I-80 and routes into New Jersey. In short, real estate experts advise that “2025 might just be the year to make your move” in the Poconos, with strong demand for housing supporting local builders and agents.

Tourism and Short-Term Rentals

Tourism remains the cornerstone of the Pocono economy. A recent report by the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau highlights the impact of vacation rentals: on a per-reservation basis, short-term rentals generate nearly four times more local spending than hotels, and overall STRs support about one-third of all jobs in the Poconos. In other words, platforms like Airbnb and VRBO are a major driver of revenue and employment in the region (through lodging, retail, dining, recreation, etc.). Statewide, tourism is booming: Pennsylvania’s tourism industry reached $84 billion in economic output with 500,000 jobs in 2024, and grew by $7 billion (30,000 jobs) under recent policies. Pocono leaders hope this broader tourism growth will flow into the mountains, filling hotels, resorts and attractions year-round.

Transportation & Infrastructure

Better transportation links are also on the horizon. In late 2024, the Scranton-to-NYC passenger rail project received a $9 million federal grant for bridge work. This funding targets three critical bridge sites and upgrades track speeds to Amtrak standards. Once completed, the plan calls for three daily roundtrips, with stations in East Stroudsburg and Mt. Pocono. Politicians and community leaders emphasize that this “not study money” will directly advance construction. Improved rail connectivity could significantly boost Pocono tourism (by bringing day-trippers from NYC/NJ) and help commuters, effectively expanding the region’s customer base and labor pool.

Taken together, these trends point to strong momentum in the Pocono business landscape. Major resort operators and employers are investing in expansions (creating hundreds of jobs) just as tourism demand remains high. Local real estate markets are buoyed by out-of-state buyers and limited supply. And strategic infrastructure funding promises to bring more visitors and commerce to the area. Of course, challenges remain, such as workforce housing shortages and rising costs, but analysts are optimistic. As one official noted, employers expanding here “have to be assured that there’s going to be a workforce” ready to fill these jobs.

With Pennsylvania’s economy growing and tourism dollars pouring in, the Poconos stands to benefit significantly. Businesses in Monroe, Pike and surrounding counties are already planning for higher demand. For example, in response to the Great Wolf Lodge expansion, resort leaders are even exploring workforce housing solutions to attract and retain staff. Meanwhile, local chambers and educators are partnering to train students in hospitality and technical fields.

Key Takeaways:
  • The new Great Wolf Lodge expansion in Pocono Manor is a $125M upgrade adding slides, suites, restaurants, and 300 new jobs.
  • Tobyhanna Army Depot’s microelectronics facility strengthens defense manufacturing capacity and promises local job growth.
  • Pocono home prices and sales activity are rising as interest rates stabilize; East Stroudsburg is in high demand for commuters.
  • Short-term vacation rentals power a significant share of tourism revenue and employment (≈1/3 of local jobs).
  • Federal grants ($9M) are jump-starting the long-awaited Scranton–NYC Amtrak corridor, with stops in the Poconos
